"Creating original music in rural Andalucía is far from easy. The local music scene, dominated by cover bands, offers little support for artists pushing creative boundaries. Venues are often reluctant to showcase new material, and as a result, many talented musicians either pack up and leave for the city or quit music entirely. Conservatoire-trained artists find themselves drained by rigid structures, their creativity stifled long before it has a chance to flourish. In this context, it can feel like there’s simply no room for original art."

For Marco Malfario and his collective of local musicians at Winter Flowers Records, the challenge is worth facing. They’ve built something unique, fueled by passion and a DIY spirit. Their latest project, Tonada del Escarabajo, is proof that even in a region where creative infrastructure is lacking, meaningful music can still emerge. This ambitious work blends folkloric Latin American music with progressive rock elements—a fusion that might seem improbable, but it thrives on collaboration and shared vision.

The album was born out of pure artistic necessity, with every part of the process handled by the artists themselves—from writing and arranging to recording and creating the artwork. Tonada del Escarabajo represents the power of unity in a place that rarely makes room for new sounds. Against the odds, Marco and his team have carved out a space for original music, defying the limitations of rural Andalucía and proving that creativity knows no boundaries.

Winter Flowers Records is more than just a label; it’s a collective that turns obstacles into opportunities, offering local artists a platform to express themselves in a place where opportunities are rare. In Tonada del Escarabajo, Marco Malfario and his collaborators have created a sonic landscape that challenges the norms, pushing forward with the belief that art can thrive anywhere—even in the quiet corners of Andalucía.
